| Windows 7, netdud zero |

I got asked by a nice person the following question: What are your thoughts on Windows 7? I've read good things about it, but wanted to get your take.
Here's my short answer: I honestly know nothing about it.
So far, what I have heard from people who have fiddled with it is that Win7 is faster, better, more. That's a promising thing to hear about software that isn't done yet. If you NEED to do something that Win7 can do and what you have can't, then I guess it would be worth looking at. Once it's done. I don't have ANY need for a new operating system, so it's not really that interesting to me beyond that.
( Now Here's my more characteristic, long answer. I like it more, because it's more ABOUT ME! ) If you NEED to do something that Win7 can do and what you have can't, then I guess it would be worth looking at. Once it's done. Spam sez "Be a real man √ biggiesize your device." |

| What Computer Should I Buy--Special "This Month" Edition |
[Sep. 26th, 2008|02:15 pm] |
I was talking to my friend Rubbertoe in Vancouver over the emails.
You must understand something: Rob has worked with computer crap longer than I have. He's probably done an order of magnitude more meaningful work with computers than I have. He's also crankier than I am. He project-manages for a company that makes software for Windows. He runs Linux boxes in his house. He worked with AS/400s. He Knows Things.
And he is very happy with his Macbook.
Sadly, Rob had a beer-related mishap with his MacBook, which ended OK, but now he doesn't trust it forever. He does a lot of recording and stuff, and he's had laptops go away on him before, taking with them things he would have preferred not to lose. So he bought aTime Capsule, which he set up and it Just Worked.
He wrote this: *... i'm becoming such a fan of apple that i * feel i need to go out and buy an iphone just so i have a reason to * bitch about them.
To which I replied:
Save some money--install iTunes on your Windows machine. Be sure not to tell me how that goes.
This lead to a discussion of What Computer To Buy Today, which is a question I have been asked a lot in the last couple-three months.
( And here is where I am with that ) "Spam sez "Perfect weight and feel." |

| Uncle netdud's Ways of the Weeeeb - Part III - The Web is Easy |

If a site requires me to do something extra in order to see the content, I will try to find the same thing somewhere else.
By "something extra" I mean: - use a specific browser - install a plug-in or version change - deal with pop-ups, pop-unders, sliding weasel ads, or other sad and desperate marketing tools - trust that a security certificate is OK when my browser says it isn't - follow any instructions that say "Just ignore this error message" - install new Java, or break Java running in another window/tab - change a security setting, including cookies - sit through some idiotic Flash bullshit
( How sweet is the Internet? ) What you are doing makes no sense on any level. Spam sez "failure notice" |

I use an RSS Aggregator to keep on top of lots of things online
If you know what RSS is, and/or you already use it, then you might not get much out of this post.
( And if you don't, you might find this useful )
Bottom Line: - If you read a lot of stuff on the Web, and/or the same sites every day, RSS can get you to more information, faster. - If you don't use RSS, you should at least take a look at it. Spam Sez "Latest crazy hip in thing" |

| I have a lot of work to do, so I'm posting links instead |
[Jul. 7th, 2008|12:59 pm] |
I will freely admit that I have not yet fully tested the software that this post is about. And I have work to do today, so I won't be doing so right away. Whether it works or not however, I think that the IDEA of this software is really good, and should be looked into a lot more, because it actually helps people use computers for the things computers are actually good at.
Despite endless self-help, "time-management," and other snake-oil applications, the fact is that computers are really best at doing grunt work--boring, repetitive tasks that get in the way of your thinking. If you are using your computer in order to INCREASE your productivity, you should be spending as little time as possible doing the work it can do better without you. You and your computer should get in each other's way as little as possible.
WHOOPS!
Hang on--take a moment to look around you. If, without leaving your chair, you are able to see any of the following:
- A cartoon about an office which has been printed out and hung up - A fabric wall which does not reach the ceiling - A cup which has at any time contained a non-dairy creamer product - A book with "For Dummies" on the cover - Anything by Mary Englebreit - A post-it note with a password on it - A wavy sort of box logo with four colours in it
You should not read this. Move on to the posts about stuff to do while you are bored at work. You'll need them, as you will be doing a lot of that kind of work for a long time. ( Otherwise, this could make your life easier. ) No matter what form you use it in--command line, Automator, Sprog--you really should try scripting. Spam sez "Automatic movement." |

CURSE these CONFOUNDED figuring machines!
WUN Anyone else using Cox to connect to the intertubes and is having problems with their VOIP phone (Vonage or whatever) will now tell me about it. ( And the response was deafening! )
TEW I gotta DVD. It's a DVD of me. I ripped it on my Mac. I say again, this is content to which I have legal rights. It's mine. Not stealing. So now I have a 2.1 gig mp4 file. I want to cut it up into pieces, and make those pieces a DVD. On my Mac, running 10.4. I have iMovie and iDVD. I don't want to buy software. ( I can use Loonix too! I got a note from my mom! ) Anyone got any better ideas?
